Dead pixel or dust? Inspect your screen with solid colors

Prepare the screen for inspection

One dark dot on a white page does not prove that the matrix is faulty. This could be surface contamination or an image element. Turn off the screen and examine the surface in soft lighting. For cleaning, use the method approved by the manufacturer of your model.

After turning on, set the normal operating brightness. Open the fields below full screen. Switch colors manually and view the screen from a familiar distance without pressing on the surface.

What to compare on different colors

Dark dots are clearly visible on a white field, and luminous ones on a black field. Red, green and blue fields help you notice the behavior of individual color components. Record whether the dot stays in the same physical location as colors change and the page moves.

If a suspicious element is included in a regular screenshot and is visible on another working display, this is an argument in favor of the image or software layer. A hardware defect in the screen itself is usually not recorded in the screenshot. Screen photography captures both the image and the surface, and therefore solves a different problem.

Why is there no automatic “3 pixels found”?

The page knows what color it sent to the browser window, but does not see the physical glow of each matrix element. Without external observation, she cannot count display defects. Any automatic counter in such a scenario would require additional explanation of the method.

The fields help a person to conduct an inspection. They do not establish a warranty category for the defect. Acceptable conditions depend on the specific model, contract and manufacturer's regulations; check them according to your documents.

How to record an observation

Save the screen model, the date of detection, the location of the dot and the colors in which it is visible. Take photos with normal exposure and a wide shot to anchor the location. Do not include a serial number in a public photo unless you need it for circulation.

If it's not the individual dot that's bothering you, but the light area around the edge, use checking illumination uniformity. For steps at smooth transitions there are gradient test.

Do not try to “treat” the screen with pressure, heat or prolonged bright flickering. For an initial inspection, a quiet switching of fields is sufficient; Repair recommendations should be given by the service for a specific device.
