Prepare a short episode
The page goes down, suddenly jerks up and continues moving again. First check if this is repeated on another long page or document. If the jump is only on one site, the reason may be a change in its markup when loading images and advertisements.
In the workspace below, normal page scrolling is intercepted. The direction of each event and the number of quick changes are visible. Make five slow scrolls down, stop, then five up. Don't mix directions in the first episode.

What does change of direction mean?
The counter increases if the opposite event occurs shortly after the previous one. With a deliberate movement of the finger back, such a change is normal. A repeated backlash is suspicious when you physically keep turning in only one direction.
The delta value depends on the device and settings. For some, the browser transmits steps, for others - conditional pixels or lines. The delta number cannot be compared between two different mice as an indicator of quality.
Smooth scrolling and the inertia of the touch device also change the flow of events. If you are checking the wheel, use a physical mouse: swiping the touchpad does not reproduce the operation of its encoder.
How to narrow down the cause
- Repeat on another page and in another application. The jumping interface of one site does not yet point to the mouse.
- Check another connection: USB without a hub, fresh charge, receiver closer to the device.
- Look at the manufacturer's smooth scrolling settings and program profiles. Change one setting at a time.
- Connect the mouse to another computer. If reverse events are reproduced there, the version with the device becomes stronger.
If it is a free-rotating model, please check the fixed-step mode separately. The inertia of the wheel and the deliberate return of the finger are easily disguised as “jumps”.
When is a service center useful?
If the same unidirectional movement consistently produces opposite events on different computers, save the description and series of observations. The online test does not determine the condition of the encoder contacts and does not select a repair method. It helps to reproduce the complaint.
Do not accidentally fill the device with liquids. For cleaning and warranty claims, follow the manufacturer's recommendations. Before purchasing a replacement, it is a good idea to check and main buttonsto describe the entire problem.
